ICMI was founded in 1908 and has been a commission of the International Mathematical Union (IMU) since 1952.
IMU is a member of the International Science Council (ISC). Through IMU, ICMI endorses ISC’s Principles of Freedom and Responsibility in Science that affirm the right and freedom of scientists to participate on an equitable basis in legitimate scientific activities. ICMI upholds these principles by opposing any discrimination on the basis of such factors as ethnic origin, religion, citizenship, language, political or other opinion, gender, gender identity and sexual orientation, disability or age.
A major responsibility of ICMI is to plan for the quadrennial International Congress on Mathematical Education (ICME), held under the auspices of ICMI.
