IMU’s Commission for Developing Countries (CDC) would like to call for applications for its various scholarship and support programs for mathematicians in and from developing and economically disadvantaged countries.
1. CDC GRANTS AND SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM FOR MATHEMATICIANS
CDC supports research travel of mathematicians based in developing countries as well as mathematics research conferences in the developing world through its Grants Program which is open to mathematicians throughout the developing world, including countries that are not (yet) members of the IMU.
(A) INDIVIDUAL SUPPORT PROGRAM: Research Travel Grants (minimum stay: 4 weeks)
The program supports travel costs for research visits from mathematicians based in developing and economically disadvantaged countries, with a Ph.D. or equivalent in the field of mathematics and working in all areas of advanced mathematics. The research visits should have a duration which allows profitable contacts and scientific cooperation (four weeks is the minimum).
Mathematicians from developed countries are only eligible for visits made to mathematical centers in developing countries. The host institution should explicitly commit itself to supporting the local expenses.
Due to the limited funds at its disposal, therefore the CDC is not able to support:
· Training visits (even for Ph.D. programs).
· Applications by individuals for travel grants to attend conferences (even for invited speakers).
· Travel support when local support is sufficient to cover both local and travel expenses (e.g. visiting professorship positions).
(B) CONFERENCE SUPPORT PROGRAM
The program gives partial scholarships and grants to conferences in the field of mathematics and organized in developing and economically disadvantaged countries. The funds are for academic use only (travel or living expenses of invited speakers or participants coming from developing countries).
The Conference Support Program also supports a few major international conferences occurring in developed countries who would like to invite mathematicians from developing counties.
· Conferences should address a regional audience and not only a national one; they should benefit mathematicians from the neighboring countries as well.
· The funds awarded are for academic use only (travel or living expenses of invited speakers or participants coming from developing countries).
· The cost of speakers from developed countries cannot be covered by the grant.
· The Grants Commission of CDC only considers conferences at the research level and, due to lack of funds, cannot support schools or activities which are mainly concerned with professional training.
· The Grants Commission of CDC should not be expected to provide the main share of financial support; an overall conference budget has to be included with the application.

2. IMU Mathematics Library Assistance Scheme for Developing Countries
The Commission for Developing Countries, an elected commission of the International Mathematical Union (IMU), has launched a new support scheme where the shipment of textbooks to universities in less economically developed countries is supported.
Individual scientists or institutions wishing to donate books in the mathematical sciences to libraries in developing countries (mainly in English, Spanish or French) can contact CDC to receive financial support for the shipment costs.
Libraries in universities/research institutions in developing countries can apply to receive donated books.

3. Volunteer Lecturer Program- Call for Host Universities in Developing Countries
The goal of this program is to offer universities in the developing world lecturers for intensive 3-4 week courses in mathematics at the advanced undergraduate or master's level to build up local capacity.
The hosting university has no financial obligations (all cost of the lecturer will be covered by CDC or one of its partners) but is expected to provide a local assistant who prepares the students beforehand, assists the volunteer lecturer when necessary during the course, and takes care of any necessary follow-up. These courses should have a student audience of 15-20 or more, include examinations, and be part of a regular degree program at the hosting university.
IMU/ CDC provides the host universities access to the database of all volunteer lecturers. After an agreement with the university on an appropriate choice, volunteer lecturers are provided with travel and living expenses. These funds are provided either directly by IMU/ CDC or by one of the partner agencies.
