Conference Support Guidelines
The first priority of the IMU is to support conferences of scientific merit
held in a developing country with significant participation of scientists
from the developing world. Only in exceptional cases will IMU support
conferences in developed countries with no developing country component.
IMU conference support categories:
(Please determine the appropriate category and follow the category's
Category A: Conferences Held in Developing Countries
Conference support requests for Category A will be considered by the IMU
Commission on Development and Exchanges (CDE) and will follow CDE guidelines
All applications should be submitted online
Category B: Conferences held in developed countries for which the support
requested is for mathematicians from and/or working in developing countries
Conference support requests for Category B will be considered by the
IMU Commission on Development and Exchanges (CDE) and will follow CDE
All applications should be submitted online at:
Category C: Other Conferences Held in Developed Countries
Applications for support that do not conform to Categories A or B will be
considered only on an exceptional basis. Conference requests in this
category will be reviewed by the Executive Committee of IMU and must be sent
to the IMU Secretariat (preferably by e-mail at
secretary(at)mathunion.org) by November 1
of the year prior to the conference date.
Category C applications must adhere to the following guidelines:
Any conference sponsored or co-sponsored by IMU is to be organized as
an international conference.
All conference applications must include a cover sheet listing the amount
of IMU requested support and the intended purpose of the funds requested.
The request also must include a conference budget.
All contributions by IMU to a conference must be matched by at least an
equal contribution from other sources.
An IMU contribution is to be utilized for travel or living expenses
of the invitees, preferable foreigners. No invitee can obtain IMU
support to cover both travel and local expenses.
Immediately after the conference is completed, a financial statement
giving the full budget of the conference (showing the income from all
sources and the expenditure on all accounts) and a report on the scientific
activities are to be sent by the Chairman of the Organizing Committee
to the Secretary of IMU.
In the years of the International Congresses, the IMU does not financially
support conferences other than the Congress itself.
It can, however, give its imprimatur to mathematical meetings that
meet the conference guidelines.
The ICSU principle of free circulation of scientists should be observed
http://www.icsu.org/5_abouticsu/STATUTES.htm Statute 5). IMU reserves
the right not to support conferences in countries which refuse to grant
visas to bona fide scientists without due reason.
