From its beginning, ICMI has been involved in the project of the international mathematics exhibition Experiencing Mathematics!, initiated and supported by UNESCO and developed by the Centre de culture scientifique, technique et industrielle (CCSTI) of the Région Centre-Orléans in France, together with Tokay University (Tokyo) and the Ateneo de Manila University (Philippines)
This interactive exhibition is intended to show to all visitors that mathematics
- is astonishing, interesting and useful
- is accessible, for the first steps, to everyone
- plays a large part in our daily life
- has an important role in our culture, sustainable development and progress.
The exhibition was presented first at ICME-10 in Copenhagen in July 2004, and since that time has travelled around the world, being presented to more than 800 000 pupils and students, their teachers and parents, in more than 50 cities from 20 countries, in Southern Africa, Middle East, South-East Asia, and Europe. It is now travelling in Asia and Latin America, and was also shown in July 2008 in Monterrey at the time of ICME-11.
In March 2008, a multilingual virtual exhibition based on this interactive hands-on exhibition was developed for teachers — especially for secondary teachers of southern countries — by the CCSTI of the Région Centre-Orléans. This virtual exhibition is supported by the Unesco Basic Science Eucation Program.
ICMI brings its continued support to the project Experiencing Mathematics! For more information, visit the homepage of this travelling international math exhibition.
