President Jiang:" The Chinese Government supports ICM2002."
 

Chinese President JIANG ZEMIN met a group of mathematicians in Zhongnanhai, Beijing, on October 12, 2000. During the meeting, President Jiang expressed his interest in and support to the coming International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM2002) to be held in Beijing, August 20-28, 2002. President Jiang accepted the invitation, by the International Mathematical Union (IMU) and the ICM2002 Local Organizing Committee, to attend the opening ceremony of ICM2002. He stated that the Chinese Government supported ICM2002, and hoped that this Congress would promote researches and education of mathematics and contribute to science and technology development in China.

The mathematicians whom President Jiang met were at the time attending "the International Conference in Memory of Wei-Liang Chow and Kuo-Tsai Chen" held in Nankai Institute of Mathematics, chaired by Professor S. S. Chern.
