              | The Chinese currency is called renminbi (
people's currency) and is often abbreviated to RMB.  The Chinese
currency Renminbi, is issued by the state bank.  The standard unit of the Renminbi is
yuan, with jiao and fen as the subsidiary units. Thus one yuan equals ten jiao and one jiao equals ten fen. Yuan, jiao and fen are issued both in bills of exchange and coins. Renminbi features the following denominations: one, two, five, ten, fifty and a hundred
yuan; one, two, and five jiao; and one, two and five fen.  Hongkong's currency is the Hongkong dollar and Macau's is the
Pataca. Both currencies are worth 7% more than Renminbi.  RMB (Renminbi) is the only currency to be used in China.
Money exchanges by cash or traveler's cheques can be made at the
branches of Bank of China at Beijing International Airport,
hotels and tourist stores. Please remember to keep the currency
exchange receipt with you as it has to be shown to the bank
clerk if you are going to convert the remaining amount of RMB
back into foreign cash when leaving China.

              | You can change money in most hotels and banks, and the rate is the same everywhere. To
change RMB back into your home currency, you must retain the exchange slips that are given to you
at the bank or money exchange counter.   When you leave China, you can change the remaining
amount of Renminbi back into foreign cash and take out of China
within a grace period of six months prior to departure from
China, but in doing so they have to display foreign currency
                conversion receipts. | |

              | But note that not all
these currencies are accepted at some small money exchange
                outlets. | |

              | So far the following foreign credit cards are acceptable in China: MasterCard, Visa, Diners, JCB and American Express. Major credit cards such as MasterCard, Visa, Diners, JCB and American Express can be used
to purchase goods in large department stores. They can be used to pay for hotel rooms and for meals
in some of the fancier restaurants. You can also buy plane tickets with them. As mentioned above,
advance in the main offices of the Bank of China. It is also possible to cash a check against
the AmEx card, but again, only in the main offices. Credit cards such as American Express, Diners Club, JCB,
Master and Visa are acceptable for payment at hotels or tourist
stores. But it is difficult to draw cash with credit cards. | |
