A celebration of Math for all to see

Brazil is one of the many countries where a strong mathematical research culture coexists with a general disregard for Mathematics in society. Our discipline is still widely seen as difficult, esoteric and removed from everyday life.

The Brazilian mathematical community has been working hard to change this perception. As part of the Brazilian Biennium of Mathematics 2017-2018", we are organizing the “Festival da Matemática” (Math Festival) from April 27th – 30th, 2017. The main goal of the Festival is to give children the chance to see Mathematics for what it is: a challenging and fun discipline that is as beautiful as it is fundamental to the contemporary world.

Festival activities will include electronic exhibits, experimental workshops, plays, movies. There will also be many talks: speakers range from world-renowed mathematicians to youngsters who, having come through our Math Olympiad system, have gone on to successful careers in many areas. We hope these activities will leave a lasting impression on a generation of Brazilians.

Rio de Janeiro is the host city of the Festival. More information about the Festival is available on the website (in Portuguese): http://www.festivaldamatematica.org.br.
