Tokieda and his toys: finding magic in the ordinary

Wondrous qualities can be found in even the smallest details – and through the eyes of Japanese mathematician Tadashi Tokieda, these qualities can be revealed and explained. “Small mathematics in a big world” feels more like a spectacle than a public lecture. “Billions of people from around the world drink from a cup like this,” he proclaimed as he walked onto the stage, displaying a little white teacup.

Mathematics can inspire & help people think clearly

Stanford professor David Donoho gave a plenary session at ICM 2018, speaking about how his father died from prostrate cancer which was not properly diagnosed. Awarded the Gauss Prize at the International Congress of Mathematicians for his contribution to compressed sensors, his research revolutionized MRI scanning, and three of the biggest global companies now use technologies based on his findings.

Einstein lives on through modern wave mechanic research

French mathematician Nalini Anantharaman is illuminating new frontiers in delocalization of eigenfunctions, despite missing critical information on the spectrum of Schrodinger operators. E=hv is a simple equation that defines much of our understanding of particle physics and energy transfer that dates to Einstein’s realization and Planck’s discoveries. But the equation has limitations that are still being explored. Born into a family of mathematicians, Anantharaman works to resolve contemporary problems in the areas of quantum ergodicity, partial differential equations, spectral theory through elaborating on missed opportunities in Einstein’s work.

Arora: ‘Deep learning is at a pivotal point in development’

Although deep learning is a relatively young discipline, around for less than eight years, mathematician Sanjeev Arora believes it is fast approaching a fundamental point in its academic and practical development for machine learning. In his plenary speech at the 2018 International Mathematics Congress, Arora said that machine learning may soon lead to progress for a range of academic disciplines from sciences through to humanities and the arts.

How computer science and math intertwine

Alexander Lubotzky has had a close-knit relationship with computer science in his research for a while now. Opening the 6th day of ICM 2018, the Israeli professor and mathematician of the Einstein Institute of Mathematics delivered a special lecture about high-dimensional expanders, taking the concept of expander graphs above and beyond more tangible dimensions.
