Mathematician Caucher Birkar to receive new Fields Medal on Saturday

The organizing committee of the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM 2018) will present a replacement Fields Medal to Caucher Birkar on Saturday the 4th of August, at midday, in Pavilion 6, Riocentro, Rio de Janeiro. Journalists who wish to cover the event must be accredited at the press credential stand in Pavillion 5 by 11 a.m. sharp on Saturday 4th August.

“My work is conjectures based on conjectures”

Fields medalist Akshay Venkatesh delivered a plenary session to a packed auditorium of international mathematicians in Riocentro this afternoon, explaining his current research conjectures. The Indian born academic was awarded the prestigious Fields Medal on Wednesday, at the opening ceremony of ICM 2018, for his cutting edge work on analytic number theory.

The shape of geometry to come according to Andrei Okounkov

Andrei Okounkov will leave the 2018 International Congress of Mathematics as having the coolest slides of any plenary speaker. The presentation, “On the crossroads of enumerative geometry and geometric representation theory,” left a great impression on his fans. Okounkov, the 2006 Fields medalist for his contributions “to bridging probability, representation theory, and algebraic geometry,” gave a plenary talk on Lie Theory and its possibilities in the world.

Brazil’s brightest: Gugu, the eternal math olympian

In Carlos Gustavo Moreira’s – more popularly known as ‘Gugu’ – introduction at his plenary lecture on Fractal Geometry, Dynamical Systems and Diophantine Approximations on the third day of ICM 2018, Pierre Arnoux highlighted his passion for samba and the Flamengo football team, but could not leave out his remarkable trajectory from medallist to coordinator of the Brazilian Math Olympiad.

Research Conundrum: Write a lot of easy papers or tackle tough ones

Researchers are always faced with the choice – write lots of easy papers, or write quite difficult ones. These were among the opening comments of Stanislav Smirnof at a plenary session of ICM 2018 this morning at Riocentro. The Russian probability theorist described his American colleague Gregory Lawler, who delivered a plenary session this morning, as “ingenious and persistent” in his approach to his research area, “Conformally Invariant Measures on Paths and Loops.”
