World Meeting for Women in Mathematics, a satellite meeting of ICM 2018

Carolina Araujo
The organizing committee of the 2018 International Congress of Mathematicians in Rio has set inclusiveness as one of our main priorities. Marcelo Viana, chair of our Executive Committee, wrote in our website about the “new challenges ahead: how to make mathematics more global, better known and spread throughout the planet”.

The gender gap in Mathematics deserves special attention from our community. With this in mind, the IMU Committee for Women in Mathematics (CWM) is happy to announce the World Meeting for Women in Mathematics - (WM)2, a satellite event of the ICM 2018. It will take place at Riocentro convention center - the same venue as the ICM - on July 31st, 2018 - the day preceding the Congress.

The (WM)2 will bring together mathematicians from all over the world to think about and discuss the gender issue in mathematics and its challenges, initiatives, and perspectives for the future, with a strong focus on Latin America. It will also include invited talks by Latin American female mathematicians.

In the last few years, groups of women mathematicians have gathered to launch networks and develop gender-related activities in several Latin American countries. Among these initiatives, we mention the commission for equality and gender of the Mexican Mathematical Society, and the Collective of Women Mathematicians in Chile. In Brazil, the first meeting specifically for women in mathematics, the "Encontro Paulista de Mulheres na Matemática" (Meeting of Women Mathematicians from the state of São Paulo), took place in March 2016. The impressive number of participants reflected an urge by our community to bring forward the discussion about gender issues in mathematics. For the official Biennium of Mathematics in Brazil, 2017-2018, a series of activities are being planned to foster this debate nationwide.

Meeting of Women Mathematicians from the state of São Paulo

The IMU Committee for Women in Mathematics (CWM) was created in March 2015. Since then, it has been supporting several regional and continental networks for women in mathematics. The CWM understands the importance of helping the launching of a Latin American organization for women in mathematics. In this direction, the CWM has sponsored several initiatives, such as the meeting of Latin American Women in Mathematics during the Fifth Latin American Congress of Mathematics (Colombia 2016), and the workshop Women in Mathematics in Latin America: Barriers, Advancements and New Perspectives (Mexico 2016). A list and description of events sponsored by the committee can be found at the CWM's webpage. The organization of the (WM)2 fits this goal, and will be the most important event to be organized by the CWM since its creation.

We are expecting some very interesting debate about women in mathematics. If you are interested in the topic, come and join us!
