A central challenge in organizing an ICM is to promote participation from all regions in the world, including economically disadvantaged areas. This concern is particularly present in ICM 2018, the first to take place in Latin America. Our region has traditionally profited from financial aid programs and is keenly aware of their far-reaching impact.

It is thus a great pleasure for the ICM 2018 organizing committee to launch the "Open Arms program", which will offer travel grants to mathematicians from developing countries to attend the ICM in Rio de Janeiro. We are confident that this initiative is a key step in ensuring a significant representation from all regions of the world in the most important event in Mathematics.

The Open Arms program will grant 550 travel awards, 200 of which to mathematicians working in countries in Latin America other than Brazil. The program is sponsored by IMPA and the Brazilian Mathematical Society, alongside with a generous offer of 50 travel grants from the International Mathematical Union. Applications to the program will be open from April 15 to October 15, 2017. The selection will be merit-based with special attention given to participation by early- career mathematicians and women, as well as to geographic balance. The exact amount of each award will depend on the committee's evaluation and budget constraints. The Brazilian mathematical community is excited to promote inclusiveness through the Open Arms program. Recipients of the travel grants will bring back the full ICM experience to their home countries, sharing and celebrating the main recent achievements in their fields. Our own experience as beneficiaries of such aid makes us confident in the long-lasting impact of this initiative.
