The International Commission on Mathematical Instruction is a worldwide organisation devoted to research and development in mathematical education at all levels. Its purpose is:

to promote international programs of activities and publications that improve the collaboration, exchange and dissemination of ideas and information on all aspects of the theory and practice of contemporary mathematical education.

to foster efforts to improve the quality of mathematics teaching and learning worldwide.

to support and assist the International Congress on Mathematical Education (ICME) and meetings or conferences of ICMI affiliated organizations.

ICMI was founded in 1908 and has been a commission of the International Mathematical Union (IMU) since 1952.

The 2017 Hans Freudenthal Award for outstanding contributions of an individual’s theoretically well-conceived and highly coherent research program goes to Terezinha Nunes.

The 2017 Felix Klein Award for life-time achievement in mathematics education research is being awarded to Deborah Loewenberg Ball.

The 2nd Congress on Mathematics Education for Central America and the Caribbean (CEMACYC II) took place in Cali, Colombia, from October 29 to November 1, 2017.

The ICMI EC 2017-2020 is currently holding its first meeting. The meeting started on Thursday, June 8 and will last until Saturday, June 10 and is hosted by EC member Jean-Luc Dorier from the University of Geneva.

Since 2003, the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction (ICMI) awards biannually two awards to recognise outstanding accomplishments in mathematics education research: the Felix Klein Medal and the Hans Freudenthal Medal.
