The IMU is an international non-governmental and non-profit scientific organization. IMU's objectives are:
To promote international cooperation in mathematics.
To support and assist the International Congress of Mathematicians and other international scientific meetings or conferences.
To encourage and support other international mathematical activities considered likely to contribute to the development of mathematical science in any of its aspects, pure, applied, or educational.

The International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) 2026 took place in Philadelphia, USA, from 23 to 30 July 2026, bringing together mathematicians from around the world for lectures, discussions, award ceremonies, and other activities celebrating mathematics and its global community.
The Congress followed the 20th IMU General Assembly, which was held in New York City. The ICM 2026 Program Committee was chaired by Claire Voisin, CNRS, Institut de Mathématiques de Jussieu–Paris Rive Gauche.

International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) 2030 in Glasgow, UK
21st IMU General Assembly in Dublin, Ireland
At its meeting in New York, USA, in July 2026, the 20th IMU General Assembly voted for the bid from the United Kingdom and Ireland to host ICM 2030 and the 21st IMU General Assembly, with Glasgow as venue for the ICM and Dublin for the General Assembly. IMU-Simons Research Fellowship Program for Developing Countries
The IMU's Commission for Developing Countries is proud to announce its new grant program the IMU-Simons Research Fellowship Program for Developing Countries, which is fully funded by the Simons Foundation as part of its Targeted Grants to Institutes scheme.
IMU Reserve Fund
As decided at the 19th IMU General Assembly, an IMU Reserve Fund has been established (AO CL 24/2022) to assist Members whose dues are in arrears due to temporary extreme, adverse circumstances. The IMU accepts contributions to the fund from countries, organizations, and individuals. Further details are outlined in the regulations governing the fund.
Ramanujan Prize 2026 Announced
The ICTP and the IMU have awarded the 2026 Ramanujan Prize for young mathematicians from developing countries to Mahesh Kakde of the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India.
Jean-Pierre Serre Centenary
On 15 September 2026, we celebrated the 100th birthday of Jean-Pierre Serre, recipient of the 1954 Fields Medal, whose work has profoundly influenced the development of mathematics over many decades. His centenary was marked by a special two-day conference held at the Institut Henri Poincaré in Paris.
IMU Elections for 2027-2030
Elections were held at the 20th IMU General Assembly in New York City on 20–21 July 2026 for the 2027-2030 term. An overview of the election results can be found in IMU News 138.
Abel Prize Laureate 2026 Announced
The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters has announced Gerd Faltings (Max Planck Institute for Mathematics, Bonn, Germany) as the recipient of the Abel Prize for 2026.
IMU Executive Committee Meeting 2026
The IMU Executive Committee held its annual meeting over March 13-14, 2026 in Seoul, Republic of Korea. The meeting was hosted by KIAS (Korea Institute For Advanced Study).
