Breakout Graduate Fellowship grants are funded by the generous donations from Breakthrough Prize winners. The award of full PhD grants goes to students from developing countries engaged in a PhD degree in the mathematical sciences in a developing country. The 2026 recipients are as follows (listed in alphabetical order):
Frederick Opoku is a student from Ghana. He received a two-year doctoral fellowship to pursue a PhD at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana. His research will focus on analysis and partial differential equations under the supervision of Prof. Duván Cardona Sanchez (Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana).
Nida Izhar Mallick is a student from India. She received a four-year doctoral fellowship to pursue a PhD at Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, India. Her research will focus on nonlinear analysis and optimization under the supervision of Prof. Izhar Uddin (Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, India).
Oleksii Galganov is a student from Ukraine. He received a two-year doctoral fellowship to pursue a PhD at Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, Ukraine. His research will focus on probability and stochastic processes under the supervision of Prof. Andrii Ilienko (Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, Ukraine).
Thi Hoang Anh Tran is a student from Vietnam. She received a three-year doctoral fellowship to pursue a PhD at the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Vietnam. Her research will focus on commutative algebra and computational algebra under the supervision of Prof. Trung Cuong Doan (Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Vietnam).
