Context of Mathematics Education in Luxembourg

The official IMU Adhering Organization for Luxembourg is the Société Mathématique du Luxembourg (SML).
Luxembourg is represented within ICMI by the Association des Mathématiciens du Luxembourg (AML), which brings together mathematics teachers and researchers. The ICMI Country Representative (CR) for Luxembourg must be a member of the AML. Candidates can propose their candidature, and the representative is then elected by all AML members.

Associations for Mathematics Education

The Association des Mathématiciens du Luxembourg (AML) is the main professional organization for mathematics education in Luxembourg. It connects teachers and researchers, promotes the teaching and learning of mathematics, and organizes national and international mathematics competitions.

Research Institutions for Mathematics Education Research<

Luxembourg does not have a dedicated institution for mathematics education research.
Fundamental and applied mathematical research is carried out at the University of Luxembourg, primarily within the Department of Mathematics.

Journals for Mathematics Education Research

There is currently no national academic journal dedicated specifically to mathematics education. Researchers from Luxembourg publish their work in international journals and conference proceedings.

Mathematics Teacher Education

Teachers in primary education are mainly trained at the University of Luxembourg through two Bachelor programmes dedicated to fundamental education.
It is also possible to enter the Luxembourgish primary education system with equivalent qualifications obtained abroad.
The University of Luxembourg offers both a Bachelor and a Master in Mathematics, including courses in mathematics didactics. The University also provides opportunities for collaboration with schools and for in-service teacher training.
After completing a Master’s degree in mathematics (fundamental or applied), prospective teachers must complete the stage pédagogique, a professional training program organized by the Institut de formation de l’Éducation nationale (IFEN). Depending on their status, teachers may follow different versions of this program (for fonctionnaires or employés).
