Country Contexts

The ICMI Executive Committee decided in its February 2011 meeting to initiate the Database Project, the ultimate goal of which was to build and update a database of the mathematics curricula in countries all over the world. For the first phase of this project, all ICMI Country Representatives were asked to provide a link to the webpage(s) of their country where anybody could find the official mathematics curricula at all levels of instruction (pre-primary, primary, elementary, middle, secondary, vocational, etc.). Over the years, ICMI gathered information for nearly 50 countries.

At its Executive Committee Meeting held on March 10-12, 2025, ICMI decided to enlarge the database project and to document not only the curricula but more generally the overall context of Mathematics Education in each ICMI Member Country. This will certainly take a bit of time to be completed, but it will be a precious tool to give everyone interested in Mathematics Education around the world a good overview of the world in which ICMI evolves.

For each country, we give a synthetic page of information with links to national websites on the various aspects of mathematics education. The aim is to provide on these pages only a summary of information that should be relatively stable over time (up to date details can be found by following the links).

Each country page lists the following aspects:

  • How the ICMI Country Representative is designated
  • The national context for research in mathematics education (are there any institutional organization, regular meetings, PhD programs, national journals, etc.)
  • The context of teacher education (structure of initial teacher education for different school levels, importance of research, type of mathematics teacher educators, etc.)
  • Information on teachers, professional associations, professional development
  • Curricula
  • etc.
