The ICMI Representative for Greece is nominated by the Greek Association for Research in Mathematics Education and endorsed by the IMU Adhering Organization, The Mathematics Research Centre of the prestigious Academy of Athens, and the Hellenic Mathematical Society.
The Greek Association for Research in Mathematics Education (GARME), founded in 2005, is dedicated to advancing research in Mathematics Education across all educational levels. It promotes both theoretical and applied studies, supports the professional development of educators, and fosters collaboration among researchers in Greece and internationally. GARME publishes the peer-reviewed journal Research in Mathematics Education, available through the National Documentation Centre’s eJournals platform. The association also organizes a bi-annual national conference and thematic research events, contributing to the development of innovative pedagogical practices and the dissemination of research findings to academic and educational communities. Special attention is given to young researchers by means of:
The Hellenic Mathematical Society is the oldest and most prestigious Mathematics Association in Greece and organizes the PanHellenic Mathematics Pedagogy Conference. It has a longstanding commitment to advancing Mathematics Education through national competitions and the publication of journals focused on school mathematics. HMS also maintains an international journal dedicated to Mathematics Education and hosts an annual national conference in the field. With 40 active local branches across Greece, the Society regularly organizes regional events, seminars, and professional development workshops for educators.
Mathematics Education Research is maintained in 15 Primary and 12 Pre-school Education Departments in respective Public Universities in Greece.
With respect to Secondary Education there are two institutions situated at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens:
- The Dept. of Educational Studies at the Sch. of Philosophy, maintaining the Educational Technology Lab since 1998
- The Dept. of Mathematics maintaining a Section in Mathematics Education since 1990
- Journal of Research in Mathematics Education GARME
- International Journal for Mathematics Education, HMS-I JME
• At pre-service pre-school and primary levels, students obtain an education degree with accredited professional qualification. So is the case in domain-oriented departments (e.g. depts of Mathematics) with respect to secondary education. In the latter case accreditation to teach is obtained by means of following a set of general education courses, a subset of which is, on occasion, about domain pedagogy (e.g. mathematics education).
• With respect to in-service Professional Development opportunities there is no institutionally established service. An exception to the above is a long-term large-scale initiative of the Ministry of Education through its unit under the name of Computer Technology Institute and Press ‘Diophantus – CTI’. This initiative since 2005, provides a 96-hour course on the uses of Digital Media for Mathematics Education given by ‘Teacher Educators’ having formerly been successful in taking a 350-hour course at University Depts specialised in Mathematics Education (Wide Scale Teacher Education in the use of Technology in Educational Practice). Up till now 50% of teachers in Greece have successfully completed this course which uses a Portal containing more than 1200 digital interactive original micro-experiments covering the k-12 span in a project titled Digital School – Photodendro Portal for Mathematics.
• Apart from this Ministry-based resource, post graduate opportunities are offered by key Mathematics Education Research centres in Greek Universities at Masters and PhD levels. The oldest and most prestigious one is titled MSc in Mathematics Education, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, offered jointly with the National University of Cyprus.
• Additionally, there are ad-hoc initiatives by the Ministry’s unit Institute of Educational Policy, such as a teacher training course enabled by EU structural funds https://www2.iep.edu.gr/el/tameio-anakampsis-erga/sub-8-teacher-training-actions-5180858.
There are also Teacher Support Roles maintained by the Ministry of education as follows.
• Education Advisor. Provides pedagogical and scientific support to teachers. Ministry of Education – Structure & Roles
• Regional Centres for Educational Planning (PEKES). Coordinate professional development and educational planning. PEKES Overview – Ministry of Education. Institute of Educational Policy.
Greece maintains a national curriculum which is reformed every five years or so. From 2010 the composition of expertise comprising the respective reform committee centrally included Academic Researchers in Mathematics Education to join experienced teachers and Mathematics Academic Researchers. The latest reform can be found here. It has been piloted in a set of experimental schools and has been the basis for a set of new curriculum books. Full implementation is expected to begin the year 2007-8. The main changes have been an increase of stochastics, algebraic thinking brought earlier, geometrical transformations emphasised and a focus on the powerful ideas of mathematics such as mathematical structure, proof, generalization, variation, equivalence, transformations, approximation–convergence. Emphasis also on practices such as reasoning/argumentation, making connections, mathematical communication, selection and use of tools, problem solving, modelling.
