Associations for Mathematics Education

The Thailand Society of Mathematics Education (TSMEd) is the national organization. TSMEd was formed in 2013 and was officially registered in 2014. It holds an annual conference with peer-reviewed proceedings and publishes in the research journal: Journal of Thailand Society of Mathematics Education.  The Society not only holds an annual conference and research journal, but also organizes the Open Class as a workshop for the Professional Learning Community, which includes teacher educators, pre-service teachers, and in-service teachers to develop students’ thinking skills.

The International Society for Mathematics and Science Education is a society collaborating among Thailand, Japan, and the Lao PDR. It organizes an annual international conference and publishes the International Journal of Research on Mathematics and Science Education

Research Institutions in Mathematics Education

The Center for Research in Mathematics Education was established in 2003 under Khon Kaen University, focusing on supporting research and the development of students in the Mathematics Education Program at undergraduate, master's, and doctoral levels. It emphasizes collaboration with universities and various organizations to develop the mathematics teacher professional learning community. The center promotes research dissemination through conferences, publications, printed materials, blended media, and organizing in-service teacher training. In 2008, it co-founded the Center of Excellence (COE). The COE is committed to excellence in mathematics research, aiming to attain regional hub status in mathematics education, providing a strong foundation for the country's development in science, technology, economy, and financial systems, towards a higher quality of living for the population.
Moreover, Thailand is part of the Capacities and Networking Project CANP3 initiated by ICMI and also of the East Asia Regional Conferences in Mathematics Education (EARCOME).

Mathematics Teacher Education

The Mathematics Teacher Education Program is offered at universities with a four-year curriculum designed to prepare teachers. In 2004, the program underwent a major reform to become a professional curriculum with a five-year duration, including one year of student internships in schools. At present, it has reverted to a four-year program.
The Provisional Teaching License (P License) is valid for two years from the date it is issued by the Teachers' Council.  Applicants for the Provisional Teaching License must hold an education degree recognized by the Teachers' Council from the 2019 academic year onward (without yet being required to have the results of the teacher professional competency examinations and assessments), and must have completed at least one year of supervised teaching practice in an educational institution according to the curriculum (as prescribed by the Teachers' Council).

The Basic Teaching License (B License) is valid for five years from the date of issuance by the Teachers’ Council. Applicants for the Basic Teaching License must hold an education degree recognized by the Teachers’ Council, have completed at least one year of supervised teaching practice in an educational institution in accordance with the curriculum (as prescribed by the Teachers’ Council), and have passed the Teacher Professional Competency Testing and Assessment.

The Advanced Teaching License (A License) is valid for seven years from the date of issuance by the Teachers’ Council. See more information here.

In addition, there is a two-year master’s degree in mathematics education program for those who hold a bachelor’s degree in education, as well as a two-year master’s program for those who graduate with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and continue their studies in mathematics education (4+2 program). This group is required to complete one year of teaching practice. Graduates with a master’s degree are eligible to apply for university lecturer positions; however, they are qualified to teach only at the undergraduate level.

For the doctoral program in mathematics education, graduates are eligible to apply for higher education faculty positions and are qualified to teach at the undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels.
