Michèle Artigue

This medal is the most important international recognition awarded by IACME. It carries the name of Luis Santaló, who was a Spanish-Argentinian mathematician and educator, President of IACME, and who contributed significantly to the teaching and learning of Mathematics in Latin America. It is presented every four years to someone who has provided considerable support to the actions of IACME and to Mathematics Education in the Americas.

Luis Santaló Medal

In presenting this prestigious award to IACME considered:

  • Michèle Artigue’s significant results in research in Mathematics Education, which have been an important intellectual reference for our education community.
  • The many actions of cooperation, collaboration and solidarity with IACME and our region that Michèle has provided for many years: supporting students, graduate programs, research, and academic exchanges; and building bridges from our region to the rest of the academic world.
  • In the last 15 years, just to mention another representative aspect of her contributions, she has participated in IACME XI in Blumenau (Brazil) in 2003, in IACME XII in Querétaro (México) in 2007, in IACME XIII in Recife (Brazil) in 2011, and will be in IACME XIV in Chiapas (México) in 2015. Also, in November of 2013, she participated in the First Congress on Mathematics Education in Central America and the Caribbean in Santo Domingo (República Dominicana). Her participation has always been characterized by an extraordinary disposition, kindness and affection.
  • Her efforts have permitted IACME to strengthen its ties with the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction and with the Mathematics Education international community.

The medal will be presented on May 3, 2015 during the inaugural ceremonies of IACME XIV (http://xiv.ciaem-iacme.org) in the city of Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas (México). On that occasion Michèle will give the opening plenary address.

In the name of the Executive Committee of IACME, I would like to invite the international Mathematics Education community, and in particular colleagues from the Americas, to congratulate Michèle.

Best regards
