2nd Congress on Mathematics Education for Central America and the Caribbean

The 2nd Congress on Mathematics Education for Central America and the Caribbean (CEMACYC II) took place in Cali, Colombia, from October 29 to November 1, 2017.The site for the event was the Universidad del Valle, one of Colombia's premier institutions. The main host for the Congress was the Institute of Education and Pedagogy of that institution.The participants were able to enjoy the hospitality of the people of Cali, and visited surrounding sites of natural beauty.

CEMACYC I was held in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, with great success, in November of 2013.This Congress is organized by REDUMATE, the Network for Mathematics Education for Central America and the Caribbean (www.redumate.org), founded in 2012 during CANP II (Capacity and Networking Project) of the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction (ICMI), held in San José, Costa Rica. REDUMATE has a strategic collaborative relationship with the Inter-American Committee on Mathematics Education (CIAEM / IACME).

CEMACYC II encouraged proposals from academics and students for Communications, Workshops and Posters.  Although the event was directed toward the Caribbean and Central American region, the perspective in international, and therefore academic and students from outside the region was encouraged  The Congress was supported by ICMI and CIAEM/IACME, as well as the Universidad del Valle and Colombia's Mathematics Education community.

Official Languages: Spanish and Portuguese.

Themes

CEMACYC II had presentations related to 9 themes:

  1. Curriculum, Evaluation and Competencies
  2. Mathematics Education in Pre-School and Elementary Education (up to grade 6)
  3. Mathematics Education in Secondary Education (grades 7-12)
  4. Mathematics Education in Higher Education
  5. Ethnomathematics and Sociocultural Perspectives
  6. Initial and Continuing Teacher Preparation
  7. History and Philosophy in Teaching and Teacher Education 
  8. Problem Solving and Modeling
  9. Use of Technologies

All the themes are in relation to Mathematics Education.

The Central Themes promoted by the Congress were:

  • Curriculum, Evaluation and Competencies
  • Initial and Continuing Teacher Preparation 
  • Use of Technologies
