The International Mathematical Union (IMU)

Founded in 1920, the IMU unites more than 80 member countries, represented through their national mathematical societies and academies. Together and through its members, the IMU encourages global collaboration, and supports the development of mathematics in all regions of the world.

Mission and Purpose

IMU is an international non-governmental and non-profit scientific organization, with the purpose of promoting international cooperation in mathematics. It is a member of the International Science Council (ISC). IMU endorses ISC's Principle of Freedom, Responsibility and Universality of Science.

The objectives of the International Mathematical Union (IMU) are:

  • To promote international cooperation in mathematics
  • To support and assist the International Congress of Mathematicians and other international scientific meetings or conferences
  • To encourage and support other international mathematical activities considered likely to contribute to the development of mathematical science in any of its aspects, pure, applied, or educational

Key Information

Leadership

The IMU is administered by an Executive Committee (EC) which, in accordance with the IMU Statutes and subject to the direction and review of the members, conducts the business of the Union.

The IMU EC consists of ten voting members elected for four-year terms: the four officers (President, two Vice-Presidents, and Secretary General) and six Members-at-Large. The IMU General Assembly 2006 in Santiago de Compostela increased the number of members-at-large from five to six. The retiring president is an ex-officio member of the IMU Executive Committee without vote for a period of four years.

The current members (term January 1, 2023 to December 31, 2026) of the IMU Executive Committee are listed below.

Commissions and Committees

International Commission on Mathematical Instruction (ICMI)

The ICMI is a worldwide organization devoted to research and development in mathematical education at all levels. Founded in 1908, the ICMI has been a commission of the International Mathematical Union (IMU) since 1952.

Commission for Developing Countries (CDC)

The CDC manages all initiatives of the IMU in support of mathematics in developing and economically disadvantaged countries. It promotes the programs of the IMU in developing and economically disadvantaged countries, seeks funding to support the corresponding activities, and establishes institutional partnerships with scientific organizations with common goals.

Committee on Publishing (CoP)

The CoP is a standing committee of the Executive Committee of the IIMU. It advices the IMU on operations related to information and communication, reviews the development in information and communication, and is alert to potential opportunities to endorse standards and articulate best practice recommendations on issues related to the field, as well as potential opportunities to foster the growth and development of electronic infrastructure.

Committee for Women in Mathematics (CWM)

The CWM is concerned with issues related to women in mathematics worldwide. It proposes, encourages and facilitates activities of the IMU or other bodies to increase the visibility of women in mathematics and lead to an increase in their representation in the community at all levels and in all parts of the world.

International Commission on the History of Mathematics (ICHM)

The ICHM is an inter-union commission composed of representatives of some fifty-five nations. It promotes and encourages international cooperation in the history of mathematics, and celebrates excellence in the history of mathematics through the awarding of the Kenneth O.
