IMU CDC invites applications to the new call of the Project Support Program!

This program supports higher education and capacity building projects as well as local initiatives in mathematics and mathematical education. These projects can be international, regional or local initiatives in developing countries as defined by IMU for the period 2019-2022.

Please note that research projects are not eligible!
Projects financed in the past years can be consulted on the website of the program.

Key information:

• The projects should start between July 1, 2022 and June 30, 2023.
• The maximum amount to be awarded to each application is 10.000 €.
• The deadline for applications is January 31, 2022.

The IMU-CDC is particularly interested in ensuring that information about IMU financial support opportunities for mathematicians based in developing countries reaches as many mathematicians as possible, all around the world.

To this end, we have edited some updated flyers that can be downloaded from the CDC funding opportunities webpage.  We encourage you to share them on social networks, to send them by email and to post them on the bulletin boards of departments and research institutes.  We thank you in advance for your collaboration in this dissemination effort.

Conference Support Program

This program gives partial support to conferences in the mathematical sciences organized in developing countries. The maximum amount that is awarded is €4,000, which must be used to cover travel and accommodation costs of invited speakers or participants coming from developing countries.  In consideration of the COVID-19 pandemic, applications can include expenses for the acquisition of material or payment of services to conduct activities entirely or partially in online format. The program is partially supported by the Niels Henrik Abel Board (Norway).

IMU-CDC invites applications by July 15th, 2021, for conferences starting after November 15th, 2021.

Conference Support Plus.  Due to the pandemic, CDC is aware that mathematicians around the world may need extra help to reactivate their activities. It has been approved that the Grant Selection Committee can award, once per year, up to €10,000 for a conference which is particularly important for bringing mathematicians back together and promoting international collaborations. This award will be decided together with the October calls.  The deadline is October 1st, 2021.

Volunteer Lecturer Program

The IMU-CDC Volunteer Lecturer Program (VLP) fosters international cooperation by offering financial assistance to universities in developing countries to host a volunteer lecturer for a 3–4 week intensive course. The course given by the volunteer should be part of a regular mathematics undergraduate or master’s degree program at the hosting university, on subjects in which the university could have a lack of expertise.  Only host institutions can apply for the grant in the VLP.  This program is partially funded by the American Mathematical Society and the Niels Henrik Abel Board.

In this program, funding can cover the expenses of the Volunteer Lecturer up to €4,400.  Additionally, the grant can support preparation of course material (printing, photocopying, books) up to €1,000, and possible expenses for the acquisition of material or use of services to conduct lectures entirely or partially in the online format, up to €2,000.

IMU-CDC encourages applications to the VLP by September 1, 2021, for lectures to be held after January 1, 2022.

Free subscriptions to two journals of the Institut Henri Poincaré

The Institut Henri Poincaré in Paris is offering free subscriptions for at least five years to two of its journals:

• Annales IHP C  (Analyse Non Linéaire / Nonlinear Analysis)
• Annales IHP D (Combinatorics, Physics and their Interactions)

to libraries in developing countries.  From 2022 on these two journals will be published by EMS Press under the Subscribe to Open (S2O) model.

The call for applications is open until October 15th, 2021.  Applications should be submitted using this webpage.

The Program provides modest support for emerging research groups, working in a developing country listed in Priority 1 or 2 of the IMU Definition, making it possible for them to fund their most talented students to study full-time and pursue a Master or PhD graduate degree in mathematics.
 
We invite applications from Teams consisting of a Principal Investigator plus his or her research group and an International Partner by March 15, 2021.
 
The Principal Investigator should be a university professor in mathematics holding a PhD, working at a university or research centre in a developing country listed in Priority 1 or 2 of the IMU Definition, who is already training mathematics Master’s or PhD students and who is part of a research group. The International Partner should be a mathematician working at a university or research centre not based in any of the countries listed in Priority 1 or 2 of the IMU Definition. At the time of application there should be an active and ongoing collaboration between the International Partner and Principal Investigator.
 
This program is managed by the GRAID Subcommittee and the American Mathematical Society.

Call for Donations to the GRAID Program
Funding for GRAID is provided by voluntary donations from mathematicians or mathematical institutions worldwide. IMU-CDC acknowledges and encourages donations to GRAID that can be done via the Friends of IMU website http://friends-imu.org/donate/#graid.

The "2020 CIMPA Research School on Functional Analysis and Applications" was held at the University of Witwatersrand, South Africa during the period 13-24 January, 2020. The aim of the research school was to bring together postgraduate students and early researchers, who are within five years of graduation with their PhD, of South Africa’s higher institutions and those of the neighbouring countries who are working in the fields of functional analysis. The research school introduced them to different topics in functional analysis and gave them a broad knowledge on functional analysis and applications. The research school was also a tool for discussion and exploration of research collaboration in functional analysis. The participants had the opportunity to receive through mini courses theoretical and computational sides of several topics in functional analysis other than their areas of study.

IMU-Breakout Graduate Fellowships (BGF) awarded

The BGF Selection Committee of the CDC has completed during the month of September the evaluation of the nominations to BGF program received for the 2020 call. Three students have been awarded a BGF grant to complete a PhD program at their home countries: Benin, Indonesia and Uganda.

IMU-CDC very much appreciates the generous donations from all the Breakthrough Prize winners with which the BGF grants are funded.

IMU-CDC Graduate Scholarships GRAID awarded

The Selection Committee has completed during the month of July the evaluation of the applications to GRAID (Graduate Research Assistantships in Developing Countries) program received for the 2020 call. Three research teams of Benin, Nepal and Ivory Coast have been awarded a GRAID grant to support one PhD student each. A team of Cameroon has received a grant to support one PhD student and two MS students.

GRAID program is funded thanks to kind donations from mathematicians or mathematical institutions worldwide. IMU-CDC very much appreciates all the donations that are welcome, via the Friends of IMU website http://friends-imu.org/donate/#graid
