K-theory conference, Argentina, July 16-27, 2018

The K-theory Foundation is a non-profit corporation that seeks to promote research and scholarship in the mathematics related to K-theory. It organizes a K-theory conference every 4 years, to coincide with the ICM. On this occasion, the K-theory conference was a 2 week event,  consisting of a school followed by a workshop. The school took place at the University of La Plata, from  July 16 to July 20, and the workshop in the University of Buenos Aires, from July 23 to July 27. The whole event was an official ICM2018 Satellite event.

The K-theory prizes, meant to highlight the achievements of the most deserving mathematicians working in K-theory and related fields, are presented in these quadrennial conferences. For more information on the prizes go here.

EMALCA, El Salvador, July 1-13, 2018

The main purpose of EMALCA (La Escuela de Matemática de América Latina y del Caribe) is, in addition to promoting the interrelation of Central American students and professors, to contribute to reducing the defi cit of mathematical knowledge and the gap in research capacities in pure mathematics and applied between the countries of the region, as well as to increase in the medium term the human capital in Central America. EMALCA El Salvador was held in San Miguel and hosted 49 students. The main objectives were among others a) to strengthen a common Central American space to put students in contact with relevant topics of current interest, b) offer students the opportunity to know current research topics in several areas of mathematics and to motivate them to undertake research projects.

CIMPA School: Arithmétique algorithmique et cryptographie, D.R. Congo, May 7-18, 2018

The school took place in the Faculté des Sciences of the University of Kinshasa, Kinshasa, from May 7 to May 18, 2018. It gathered about 50 participants:
7 mathematicians from several countries (France, Italy, Ivory Coast, Madagascar, USA) who gave 40 hours of lectures on selected topics as well as exercise sessions, 8 young participants from neighbouring countries (Benin, Cameroon, Congo-Brazzaville, Ivory Coast, South Africa), master students or PhD students, in number theory or cryptography, about 40 regular local participants from the University of Kinshasa and other universities in DRC, mathematicians or computer scientists, students or researchers, interested in the topics of this school. The conference succeeded particularly well in gathering people from different mathematical backgrounds with interests in computational aspects of number theory and cryptography. Attendance remained high until the end of the school. Participants took a very active part by asking questions during lectures or solving exercises during tutorial sessions.
