ICMI Online Seminar Series Resources

ICMI Online Seminar Series for Capacity Building: Strengthening Mathematics Teacher Education

The main goal of the online seminar series is to establish international dialogue on good content-specific practices to strengthen mathematics teacher educators for mathematics and mathematics education courses and to hear experienced and inspiring mathematics teacher educators report on their work. While this is mainly bound to the synchronous meeting, the ideas and treated core activities can also be used after the seminar.

On this website, we offer the video recordings and materials for individual adaptation in different mathematics teacher education contexts.

Seminar 1 (October 2026)

Anjum Halai

Monday, October 12, 2026
4:00PM – 6:00PM (Pakistan Standard Time PKT, UTC +5)

Anjum Halai (Pakistan):
Language-supportive teaching in mathematics: Lessons for teacher educators’ practice

Main ideas of the seminar on mathematics education for preservice teachers:

  • Many students in the world (not only in low-income contexts) have to learn mathematics in other than their family language.
  • Preservice mathematics teachers should thereby be prepared to include multiple languages and promote productive language transitions.
  • We work on problems (for the example of area and perimeter) to initiate pedagogical reflections on mathematical and language-related learning outcomes

Materials from the seminar:

  • Anjum Halai’s and Susanne Prediger’s Slides from the online seminar (pdf)
  • Video recording of the online seminar (YouTube Link)
  • Anjum Halai’s worksheet for mathematics teacher education: Analyzing and adapting problems with respect to mathematical and language-related learning outcomes and adapting the problems to provide support for language transitions (doc)
