The Chern Medal Award is given to an individual whose accomplishments warrant the highest level of recognition for outstanding achievements in the field of mathematics.

 

The Chern Medal Award Program was established by the Executive Committee of the International Mathematical Union (IMU) and the Chern Medal Foundation (CMF), and was first awarded at the ICM in 2010. In 2026, the Chern Medal Award Program is sponsored by the Institute for Advanced Study. The Chern Medal Award Program is based on a generous grant from the CMF.

 

The Chern Medal Award consists of a medallion and a monetary award of USD 500,000.  The Medalist receives a cash prize of USD 250,000 and may nominate one or more organizations to receive funding totalling USD 250,000 for the support of research, education or other outreach programs in the field of mathematics.
