The symposium was focused around the retirement of Henk Bos as full professor of History of Mathematics on July 1, 2005.

The summer of 2001 the May Medal was awarded jointly to Ubiratàn D'Ambrosio (*1932), Brazil and Lam Lay Yong (*1936), Singapore during the XXIth Congress in Mexico City. Professor D'Ambrosio was present in Mexico City and received his medal there, while professor Lam was presented with hers during the International Mathematics Congress in Beijing 2002.

With Professor Kenneth O. May, the world-wide community of historians of mathematics has lost a colleague who as none other helped to establish the history of mathematics as a discipline in its own right.

Kenneth O. May was a mathematician and historian of mathematics of great vision. He recognized the need for a unified international community of historians of mathematics and worked tirelessly over the last nine years of his life to effect such a change.
