May 12 marks the birthday of Maryam Mirzakhani. During the World Meeting for Women in Mathematics (WM)² 2018, this date was chosen to celebrate Women in Mathematics in her memory. Since 2019, the initiative has inspired women worldwide by celebrating their achievements in mathematics and promoting an open, welcoming, and inclusive work environment for all. Since 2024, the May 12 initiative is led by the Committee for Women in Mathematics of the International Mathematical Union, with a coordination group that includes representatives from various continental organizations supporting women in mathematics.
