Hamburg’s Surroundings

The region surrounding the city of Hamburg extends up the River Elbe around 120 km from the North Sea right into the interior. Almost 4.3 million people live in Hamburg and the surrounding region. The North Sea with the famous island of Helgioland and the beaches of the Baltic Sea are a short journey away. Further inland there are other towns well worth a visit such as historical cities of Lübeck and Schwerin – all awaiting visitors with a wide range of cultural activities. One of many absolute gems is the so-called Alte Land (i.e. Old land), Northern Europe’s largest contiguous orchard.
And if you are also interested in Germany’s capital city – every hour there is a connection by high-speed ICE train to Berlin, which takes just 1.5 hours.
