The IMU is an international non-governmental and non-profit scientific organization. IMU's objectives are:

To promote international cooperation in mathematics.

To support and assist the International Congress of Mathematicians and other international scientific meetings or conferences.

To encourage and support other international mathematical activities considered likely to contribute to the development of mathematical science in any of its aspects, pure, applied, or educational.

The IMU was officially founded on 20 September 1920 in Strasbourg, just prior to the ICM in Strasbourg.

Mathematics without Borders

The Centennial of the International Mathematical Union
Strasbourg, 27–28 September 2021*

celebrates the centennial of this historic event. The opening of the conference will take place in the same building used for the ICM 1920. Up-to-date information regarding the conference can be found here.

ICM 2022 in Saint Petersburg, Russia, 6–14 July 2022 
19th IMU General Assembly in Saint Petersburg, Russia, 3–4 July

The International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) will take place in Saint Petersburg, Russia, between 6–14 July 2022. The registration and grant application for ICM 2022 are now open. Further information can be found here.

NB. The ICM will take place on 6–14 July 2022 as planned.  If the situation requires it, part of the congress will be virtual.

The 19th IMU General Assembly will be held shortly before ICM 2022 on 3–4 July.

The IMU grants a number of prestigious prizes and awards every four years at the ICM. A call for nominations for the 2022 IMU prizes was issued with an extended deadline of 28 February 2021. Further details are available here. The 2022 IMU prizes and awards will be presented at the Opening Ceremony of the ICM on 6 July 2022.

IMU EC meeting 2021

The IMU EC held its annual meeting between March 19-21, 2021. The meeting was hosted virtually for the first time due to travel restrictions resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abel Prize Laureates 2021 Announced

The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters has announced László Lovász (Alfréd Rényi Institute of Mathematics/Eötvös Loránd University, Hungary) and Avi Wigderson (Princeton Univerersity, USA) as joint recipients of the Abel Prize for 2021.

Ramanujan Prize 2020 Announced

The 2020 Ramanujan Prize for Young Mathematicians from Developing Countries has been awarded to Carolina Araujo, a researcher at the Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
